Their setting is perfect for foliage season. Settle into a comfy  chair on their verandah and you’ll have – on a clear day—views of 57 surrounding peaks. With colors expected to peak around the first week of October there this year, that gives you lots of pre and post peak time as well to get up there and take it all in.

Whether you’re coming from the South, Midwest, or elsewhere on the East Coast, the riches of autumn in New England are always worth the easy drive or quick flight. You can’t go wrong in this neighborhood of the Northeast—each of the region’s six states has its own unique take on fall bliss, with multi-hued leaves, pumpkin patches, apple orchards, and so much more to choose from.

The first thing you should know about a New Hampshire fall is how insanely colorful its trees get. The second thing to know about the state would be how to pronounce the name of the state’s capital. Calling it “CON-cord” like the grapes, or the former high-speed jet service to Europe will immediately raise some eyebrows—if you want to blend in with the locals, know that’s it’s pronounced “CONK-erd.”

Cobblestone streets, peppermint-dusted hot cocoa, and the quiet charm of a place that feels like you’ve stepped into a Norman Rockwell painting…there’s no place quite like New England during the holidays. One of the oldest parts of the country, the coastal enclaves and quaint Main Streets found throughout Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont are like none other.

Fall foliage season might be on its final verse, but as leafy canopies recede, a million windows to the stars are opened. Bare trees and longer nights make that melancholic shoulder season between fall and winter a perfect time to grab a mug of hot chocolate or a flask of Scotch, wrap yourself in a blanket, and enjoy some primo stargazing.

When I was growing up, every Friday night during winter my parents used to drive my siblings and me 90 minutes from our home outside Boston to our tiny ski cabin in Gilford, New Hampshire. When we arrived, it would somehow feel even chillier inside the house than it did outside. But the prospect of two straight days on New Hampshire's slopes was enough to make the haul and the cold worth it.

With the air growing brisker, both college and NFL teams are taking to the field again, and Americans are tuning in to cheer on their favorites. With game day comes tailgating and with tailgating comes plates of wings, bowls of piping hot chili, and, everyone's favorite, chips and dip.
